All I can say, Pete, is one of us is very confused (I certainly do not rule
out it being me). Our itinerary took us nowhere near either Beaubien nor
Phillips Junction.
I guess I'm going to have to go look at my stuff and make sure 4 was what we
were on, Maybe we had a different itinerary. I sure thought it was 4. Good
thing I had the kids with me to keep us on the trek :-)
The second thing to go is the memory...
Regards
Don

Don,
We did Trek 4 in 2005 as well. We came off the trail on August 4th,
however.
Phillips Junction was right on the way to Crooked Creek, but they had told
us at Philmont HQ, as well as at Beaubien, that we couldn't pick up on the
way, but that we had to pick up the day before.
Soooooooo, that's what we did.
After our conservation project, four of us hiked DOWNHILL to PJ as fast as
we could to reload. When I got there, I asked why we couldn't just pick up
in the morning on the way through. The PJ pholks told me, "That's not a
problem. You can do that." Arggggghhhhhhhh...
They told me there had been changeover in staff at PJ and things had been
changed. They wrote me a note to take back to the Beaubien staff telling
them that anyone on Trek 4 (or any other Trek taking them through PJ the
next day) could pick up on the way and wouldn't have to make a special trip.
Then... we hiked all the way back UPHILL to Beaubien, got to the
chuckwagon dinner in time (they held up the entire meal for us to get back -
maybe 10 minutes late), and then we talked to the Beaubien camp director
after dinner. He understood clearly the situation and made the change
immediately.
THE QUESTION I HAVE FOR YOU IS THIS:
How did you include Ute Gulch on your itinerary? We sent four guys to
make the roundtrip there and back from Cito while we were waiting for rock
climbing. (I'm thinking you hiked Hidden Valley?)

We had itinerary 4 in 2005 and had two 4 day food pickups as our biggest
pickups, and the commissaries were directly on our path, no side hikes
needed. If they have gone to a six day pickup for 2006, that would be a
pretty big change to itinerary 4. We had a hard enough time finding room
for 4 days of food, I can't imagine having to carry 6 days worth.

You pick up all of the meals that will last until your next comissary
pickup. Sometimes they have you are scheduled to miss a comissary. This
year, on Trek 4, we had to start out with 6 days of food, even though we
were within striking distance of a comissary on about day 3.
