I too have been contemplating the idea of having 3 cut-off 2 gal Clorox bottles for the food to re-hydrate in. The three bottles measure about 4 oz on my digital scale.

The process would be to mix the different items in the meal in turkey bags and place them in the plastic bottles. For instance the meat in one, the veggies in one and the dessert in another.

Then you simply boil the water and pour it into the bags within the plastic bottles to re-hydrate. You will need only one pot with this method and it may not need to be as big as the one you would otherwise carry.

We actually did something similar to this on a shakedown where we had de-hydrated meals that can be re-hydrated in their own bags. The only pot we needed was one out of a mess kit because the meals only required 2 cups of water each.

I have ordered one of every Philmont dinner and plan to test out this technique in the coming weeks.

Since the food never touches the bottles themselves you could also use one of the plastic bottles to wash dishes, one to take sponge-baths out of, and one to wash small items such as undershorts and socks. It's lighter to take the materials needed to wash cloths than it is to take a bunch of extra cloths.
