Pee Dee Area Council contingent (3 crews) is being provided each crew with 2
Katadyne Hiker water filter/purifiers and the MicroPur tablets. My crew has
used them on shakedowns with ease. The last shakedown our designated 'water
dog' purified the water with ease while assisted by the other boys. Like a
few others I don't think it is worth the risk to not use both. The filter
removes cysts and bacteria. The MP1 treats viruses. This reduces the total
treatment time to 15 minutes instead of 4 hours. Water taste has been superb;
no worse than municipal water, and possible better.
We have filtered from swamp streams and sandhills lakes with no pluggage
problems. The boys have been very careful about debris in the water. I am
going to stick a couple of coffee filters and a rubber band in the pump bag after
reading about the shallow source at Schaffer's Pass in case we encounter
such a situation.
Advisors are just along for the fun during the trek. Our training has gone
well.
