In response to the portion of this thread that questions whether Philmont's water quality requires such an emphasis on purification/filters, let us not forget the Ranch's well deserved reputation as the "University of the Outdoors". While some of the lessons taught at Philmont (bear precautions, water quality) may seem to some to be a slight bit of overkill, these techniques may leave the participant in good stead should he or she attempt to tackle some other wilderness area, in the US or elsewhere, in future endeavors.
