  Roy,
The best article I've ever seen about water purification is the Dec. 03 Backpacker article. If you read that article you would see several sides of the purification discussion and yes one of the conclusions is that city water causes more problems than "trail" water. Lots of science in the article and lots of experience of folks active on the trails who never filter but know how to select water sources. Even for thru hikers on the AT they say that trail sanitation causes more problems than not treating the water - if you look at the 3 Rules of Backcountry Sanitation on page 123 of the new BSA Fieldbook it says the same thing (1. wash your hands, 2. wash your hands 3. wash your hands). I think there is a lot of discussion about treating water at Philmont when on lots of treks it is no problem - there are many safe water outlets. In 2005 we only used the MP1s once, we also had no other health problems because of the use of hand sanitizer and clean trail habits; washing hands, not
sticking your hands in other peoples bags of snacks, washing dishes properly. Years ago the big problem was the Tetrox trots, caused by not properly washing and rinsing after the Tetrox soap, not the treatment of water on the trail.
