Couple of secrets.
Remember water filtering/purifying is a two man process. 1 clean person and
one dirty. Most people who filter cross contaminate the clean water almost
immediately.
Mountaineering hint: Old Clean socks. Even with a pre-filter and
especially when you don't I take a couple of socks (the ones where the
partner has been lost) and a couple of rubber bands. Rubber band the sock
around the intake.
Over the years I always pushed filtering, over purifying and still do.
However, If I were returning to Philmont, I would not take them, preferring
the new tablets. Safer than iodine and lighter than a filter. Low volume
water sources would be the exception.
