[Philmont]: ? to do FedEx or USPS, my feelings

Steve,
I have to agree with you, after spending 6-9 months preparing, at least hundereds of dollars just on get decent equipment, so $300.00 or so to get Philmont food shipped to us so the boys have the best idea of however to prepare Philmont food, I don't think spending the extra to bet the rush that big a deal. Then the $1300.00 for the Council.
The first time I was an Advisor in 2000 I listened and sent it US Postal Service, we go our 3rd choice. Understandably the boys, were disappointed.
I do realize there are no bad treks at Philmont, they're all great. But after the boys spend months talking about which treks have the things they really want to do then researching it on the great web sites that are available, the parents were more then happy to spend the 2 bucks per boy.
Steve as you noted, there are only a very few number of treks that go over Baldy and the Tooth. It didn't use to be that Baldy was grabbed as fast, it is for sure now. ALL 5 of the crews from my Council had those as the #1 Treks. Maybe we need to try to educate them that it's not that big a deal about climbing Baldy or coming in over the Tooth and seeing the "I made it" sign when you walk into camp, but just being there the first time, the boys are going to know how special that is.

Yes not bad. You were taking a chance on not being one of the two crews per trail on your first choice for the trek your kids picked of your expedition. I can not take that chance on a trip of a life time. FedEx has done the job of being one of the first two there now for the last two trips out there for our first picks. 1st, 32, 2nd, 30, 3rd, 24, 4th 21. These are the only treks that go to Mt. Baldy and come back in over the Tooth.

Sounds great but I dropped the postcard in mail box with the old fashion US Postal Service on Monday and received notification via email of getting our first choice on Wednesday. Not bad for 39 cents.

        Alex,
I with you, I dropped my card off at the local Kinko/FedEx, Thursday at 1:00pm, it was picked up at 3:00pm & was at Philmont at 1:00pm Friday. Going from Portland, OR to Philmont in 24hrs will make me do FedEx again!
