In 2004 I had a real dream crew of 12 boys and 2 adutls. I was able to
push the number since only one of the boys had been before, an
18-year-old who could move up to an adult spot in case one of the two
adults had trouble. The other adult had also never been. I had an
extremely strong leader as Crew Chief, who had been named by the Elks
Lodge as one of the top two boy scouts in Ohio that year. This crew
could routinely have camp completely set up within less than 30
minutes. However, with the stress of Philmont and being so close
together, even this crew developed some differences among themseves.
Two days before we came off the trail, the Crew Chief called a meeting
of only the 12 boys with no advisors to, rather than the thorns and
roses in which nothing negative is said, just let everyone speak their
peace and get it out of their system. This worked extremely well, and
restored a very cohesive unit again. I wish I could say I thought of
it, but it was much better coming from the Crew Chief. After 20 years
as scoutmaster, I continue to learn from the boys. Boys learn to lead
by leading, let them.
