Steve,
The boys picked Trek 32 this time, they liked the activities the most on that one and still get to Baldy & the Tooth. Our Trek number is 708-I1, so you'll be there weeks before us.
Last year when my daughter was there in June doing Wildernes First Aid she camped on snow on the saddle on Baldy, doesn't look like you'll have that problem.
When I first went in 2000 we started July 5th and Trek 18, we were side tracked because of bear problems at Red Hills I believe and were able to see the STOMP at Cyper's mine. The boys decided that going over Bear and Black Mountains was a good alternative to Mt Phillips so we got some elevation in.
In 2002 we did Trek 30, one of our older boys had done it in 2000 and I was really glad I worked out hard that year. I had been told Trek 30 was the hardest trek at Philmont and I sure thought it was. When we stopped at Clarks Fork and everyone else was getting ready to go home, we crossed Philmont to Cypher's, up Phillips, had a major thunderstorm coming down, up Big Red, Bear Mt, Black Mt on then to Shaeffer's. What a trek.
Once Philmont gets in your blood, I think you always will want to go back.
Brian
Brian, you said a mouth full! USPS stops at every mail box in the area,
UPS
& FedEx does not. We use the "You been to Philmont 3 ?" "1,
have you been
to Baldy, 2, did you come in over the Tooth and 3, what trek # did you do".
Our Scoutmaster has been 7 or 8 times. I think I may pick 30 or 24 as the
first choice next time. I guess I will have to see what the kids want to
do. There are no bad treks at Philmont, I use a saying that I was told many
years ago on another subject. All Women are good looking, some are just
better than other? So with that said some treks are better than other. The
guy who made the statement up had not been to Baldy or come in over the
Tooth. Fran told me that UPS is there everyday, with FedEx buying Kinko's
they have more outlets now for people to send things and 24 hours, USPS &
UPS doesn't have this advantage yet. They may be thinking of their people
also. 24 hours a day and a week, yuck. It looks like more went FedEx this
time than last. In 05 I sent ours back UPS from TN and was beat by a guy
in PA who used FedEx. He was 32 A, we were 32 B. This is a long road for
two weeks out there. When are yall out there, we are 615-F1 & 2?
