Re: [Philmont]: Water Filters/Purifiers

Coop,

I agree with you that the best advice is to follow Philmont's
recommendations. The exception may be those highly experienced and
highly trained crews that have developed their own methods that are
acceptable to their rangers. Although it probably wouldn't hurt the
experienced backpackers to try the Philmont procedures that have been
successfully taught to thousands of scouts and advisors every year.

Perhaps the discussion of water purification and cooking is tedious to
those of you who have followed the message board for years. I have
found it interesting and insightful, not for Philmont but for
backpacking in general. If the idea of the message board is to limit
discussion to only Philmont relevant issues, then it is certainly
beating a dead horse. However, I have found many of the discussions
that have been a little off-topic to be a great source of information,
especially experienced comments from Dr. Bob, Jim Moss, Pete Swiggum,
Bill Sheehan and Joe Taveres.

By the way, I just started reading the Philmont Advisor's Guide. What
a great source of information. I have recommended it to every adult I
know going to Philmont.

Every year, the discussion on filters and cooking is the same.  We, as
a group, are continually looking for the perfect solution.  We
research, we analyze, we study, and when we are done, we start the
process all over again.  It is almost like working on a government
contract!!!  Well, sometimes, best can be the worst enemy of good
enough.  I agree with Roy that if you follow your Ranger's training and
Philmont's protocols, you aren't going to have any problems.  I can't
see bring mini bake pans out to hold your food when all you are trying
to do is avoid cleaning one pot.  I vote for using the MP1 tablets and
leave the pumps and filters behind.

Most advisors that will be going to Philmont this summer aren't on this
list, so they are going to do what their Ranger suggests and I bet they
make it through okay.  Just my thoughts.
