Bill,
Let me start by saying I am a big fan of the south
country, and of Bill Cass' book "Return to the Summit
of Scouting" (which I have read several times).
Having said that, I feel you may be selling the north
country short with your comments. I did trek #21 in
2004, and absolutley loved my time in the north.
There are some of the most breathtaking vistas there
and some beautiful trails. I have also never seen a
view at Philmont that tops the one from the base of
the "Eternal Meadow" at Miranda looking towards Baldy.
The areas where the fire were are growing back, and
many areas weren't touched at all.
As for the Baldy and Tooth combination, it is very
special. Baldy looms over you for days as you
approach it, and climbing it is a very unique
experience. Finishing your trek on the Tooth and
looking north towards Baldy, you realize how far you
have come. My favorite crew picture from 2004 is us
sitting on the Tooth with Baldy in the distance.
I would encourage everyone to explore all areas of
Philmont if they have the chance, since each area is
special in its own way.
I enjoy reading your comments, and hope you do get to
spend some time in the north sometime.
YIS,
Kevin Caine
