I am pleased that my little essay about the virtues of the South County provoked an equally impassioned description of the beauties of the North. That was part of the point of my piece. Whenever some self-styled Philmont guru (I see myself in this description) starts extolling the virtues of one particular piece of Philmont real estate over others, particularly in the presence of impressionable youth (who must make the ultimate decision), it behooves the rest of us to chime in with equally glowing descriptions of the rest of the Ranch.
As a result of the thoughfulness that went into the North Country reply, I may schedule Baldy into one of my Autumn itineraries sooner rather than later.
The many posts about getting the trek selections in early to insure "Baldy, Baldy, Baldy" started my creative juices flowing.
As far as "over the Tooth", I hope I made my point that those 'over the Tooth" itineraries that stay at Tooth Ridge camp offer more "over the Tooth" time than those based farther away on the last night on the trail (Also, don't pass up Shaeffer's Peak).
Finally, once again, there are no bad treks at Philmont. A Scout who gets the opportunity to go to Philmont even once has a "once in a lifetime" experience, and describes it that way. Those of us who have gone multiple times know that there are still many parts of the Ranch left to explore, even if one has a lifetime of opportunities. I would not want one of the youth to feel "disappointed" because his itinerary did not include Baldy (or any other one particular feature).
No matter what, the Bald one is a striking feature that can be seen from a variety of points on the Ranch.
All for now.
