We've gone twice by train. Both times, we watched the loading and unloading
of the packs from the baggage car at both ends (Fullerton and Raton). Other
than making sure nothing was hanging on the outside, we did nothing special,
no duffels, trashbags or other. No damage or loss had occurred either time.
The folks for the train, being very used to crews going to Philmont, had no
difficulty knowing just what to do. We also had a box with some extra crew
gear that we sent, and it emerged undamaged.
Obviously, as you will likely be on the train a long time (I don't know
where you are coming from, it is a 22 hour ride for us), bring stuff for
such a long ride (particularly a pillow and light blanket, the pillows they
provide are pretty weak).
