I have taken the train twice from Chicago to Raton, both times going out to Raton we placed our packs in the "carry on" portion of our car, (where we boarded). Returning from Raton to Chicago, our packs went in the baggage car. The fisrt time I used my raincover to try to protect and conceal my pack. Big mistake - had to buy a new raincover. The second time I had a sturdier bag, much like an Army duffel...it took the abuse, not my pack. We did have two packs that got off in Kansas City, by mistake, and finally got those back. Hope this helps.

Our troop will be traveling to Philmont this summer on
the train. Our question is what do we do with our
packs? Do we need to put them in duffel bag or
something similar? Will they be safe in the baggage car?
