[philmont] Albuquerque - sights to see?

Lorie,

Highly recommend getting out of ABQ asap & out into the southwest that you
came to see.

The Sania Peak thing looks out over the desert. If there’s time, go past
Taos up around the Enchanted Circle & ride the ski chair lift up at Red
River, looking out over the Carson National Forest, the Wheeler Range, and
off to your left the western mountains of Philmont. Check w/ RR’s COC.

Second, I highly recommend El Rancho de las Golondrinas, a living history
museum, circa 1750-1830. Think of New Mexico’s version of Williamsburg,
Virginia. The Scouts get to walk around an old Spanish “plantation”, for
lack of a better description that is still a working farm. It was a major
player in the Camino Real route and one of the first major settlements that
survived during the early Spanish period. There’s an old grain mill, the
fort, & a good way to stretch your legs. It’s a go-out-into kind of museum.
With proper prep, the Scouts would definitely relate what they see here and
what they’re going to experience at Philmont from the interpretative staff.

Las Golondrinas is at 334 Los Pinos Rd, Santa Fe NM 87507, 505-471-2261.
My literature is two years old but says you can get a guided tour for $40
per guide. Call 505-473-4169. General admission is $4 for 13-18, $5 for
adults. It took me about 2 ½ hrs to enjoy it. The location is right off
the highway coming up from ABQ. You can’t see it from the highway; but it’s
easy to find. Their parking lot is huge and designed with tour buses in
mind.

Hi, all
Our troop will be in ABQ for 2.5 days prior to the trek.

Looks like we are doing Rattlesnake Museum on Wed. afternoon, that leaves
Wed. eve., all day Thursday, then leaving to go to Philmont via Santa Fe,
Chimayo, and Taos. We would like to fit the Petroglyph Monument west of ABQ
and possibly Bandelier in there somewhere.

Has anyone been to the Atomic Museum in ABQ or Los Alamos?
How about the Museum of Natural History, it looks like they have some huge
dinosaurs there (we do not have that at all here in SC)? Is it worth the
visit? Would it be better to do it rather than the Rattlesnake Museum?

Beside eating at Blakes Lotta Burger, and the Sandia Tram, any other "must
sees"?

And on the trip up to Taos, what are some good things to see besides the
Pueblo and the Rio Grande Bridge?

Thanks in advance
Lorie McGraw (who is sorta familiar with things out there, but always
looking for the neat 'not to miss' stuff.)
