Subject: Re: burro time

In general, it's a really bad idea to try and plan a schedule around a
burro. Just ask some of the Crews that spent hours trying to get one to
cross the little stream at Maxwell. However, the Ponil Turnaround is
certainly one of the busiest drop-off points on the Ranch, meaning you
have buses coming in all day, at intervals that are dictated by the
departure times at Basecamp. So, the 8:00 am bus(es) at Basecamp will
arrive at the Ponil Turnaround between 8:30 and 8:45. If you're there,
they'll take you, and if not, there's another set coming in 2 - 3 hours.

It's not a situation where you have to be there at a certain time or
you end up walking to Basecamp. And if there are too many Crews for the
buses that show up, the drivers will whistle you up however many more
are needed. In such situations cooperation between the Crews is needed
- first on site, first in the bus, and so on. Death threats are only
rarely needed.

Hi, all
Our troop will be in ABQ for 2.5 days prior to the trek.

Looks like we are doing Rattlesnake Museum on Wed. afternoon, that
leaves Wed. eve., all day Thursday, then leaving to go to Philmont via
Santa Fe, Chimayo, and Taos. We would like to fit the Petroglyph
Monument west of ABQ and possibly Bandelier in there somewhere.

Has anyone been to the Atomic Museum in ABQ or Los Alamos?
How about the Museum of Natural History, it looks like they have some
huge dinosaurs there (we do not have that at all here in SC)? Is it
worth the visit? Would it be better to do it rather than the
Rattlesnake Museum?

Beside eating at Blakes Lotta Burger, and the Sandia Tram, any other
"must sees"?

And on the trip up to Taos, what are some good things to see besides the
Pueblo and the Rio Grande Bridge?

Thanks in advance
Lorie McGraw (who is sorta familiar with things out there, but always
looking for the neat 'not to miss' stuff.)

Lorie,

=20

Highly recommend getting out of ABQ asap & out into the southwest that =
you came to see.

=20

The Sania Peak thing looks out over the desert. If there=92s time, go =
past Taos up around the Enchanted Circle & ride the ski chair lift up at
Red River, looking out over the Carson National Forest, the Wheeler
Range, = and off to your left the western mountains of Philmont. Check
w/ RR=92s = COC.

=20

Second, I highly recommend El Rancho de las Golondrinas, a living =
history museum, circa 1750-1830. Think of New Mexico=92s version of =
Williamsburg, Virginia. The Scouts get to walk around an old Spanish =
=93plantation=94, for lack of a better description that is still a
working farm. It was a = major player in the Camino Real route and one
of the first major settlements = that survived during the early Spanish
period. There=92s an old grain mill, = the fort, & a good way to
stretch your legs. It=92s a go-out-into kind of = museum.
With proper prep, the Scouts would definitely relate what they see here
= and what they=92re going to experience at Philmont from the
interpretative = staff.

=20

Las Golondrinas is at 334 Los Pinos Rd, Santa Fe NM 87507, =
505-471-2261.
My literature is two years old but says you can get a guided tour for =
$40 per guide. Call 505-473-4169. General admission is $4 for 13-18,
$5 = for adults. It took me about 2 =BD hrs to enjoy it. The location
is right = off the highway coming up from ABQ. You can=92t see it from
the highway; = but it=92s easy to find. Their parking lot is huge and
designed with tour buses in mind.

The Bradbury Science Museum in Los Alamos is worth seeing. You could
stop in Santa Fe on the way to or from Los Alamos. I have seen many
Scouts around the Plaza in downtown Santa Fe.

Both are good, and both are in Old Town in Albuquerque, and Old Town is
well worth your time, too.

Some other possibilities are:

The Indian Pueblo Cultural Center
National Hispanic Cultural Center
Sadie's Restaurant for a, not too expensive, taste of New Mexico.
Albuquerque International Balloon Museum Beside eating at Blakes Lotta

As long as we're talking about other things to see/do in the
neighborhood, I would be interested in your experience with Soda Springs
Dam, a natural hot springs north of Albuquerque (Jemez Springs) - is
this a fun thing and
suitable for scouts? We'd probably do that after our trek.

Also, what about hiking Wheeler Peak? We would be in Taos on June 17
and I'm wondering about the snow pack.

Subject: Albuquerque-Places to Go

My preference would be for outdoor attractions where the youth can
stretch their legs with a bit of walking and thus get acclimated, rather
than indoor attractions.

Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument (3 separate sites east and a
bit south of the city) are well worth the visit and the walk among the
ruins and kivas will take up some time and get in some exercise.

Petroglyph is ok, but you can do that on a hit and run, in about an
hour. I did it in the time between checking out of my hotel and checking
in at the airport, for the return flight.

Bandelier is excellent and seeing it will stretch the legs a bit. It is
to the west of Taos. The road approach to the Ranch from Taos on Rt 64
through the Palo Flechado Pass is I also recommend Fort Union National
Monument (ruins of the largest army post in the Soutwest and the supply
depot for all the other forts). It's off the interstate between Santa Fe
and the Ranch. Capulin Volcano National Monument to the east of Philmont
is well worth the visit, a perfect cinder cone rising off the plain. You
can hike around the rim of the caldera or walk down to the lava plug
(you drive to the top, then get out and walk-you don't have to climb the
mountain yourself).

Well, I seem to have migrated away from the Albuquerque area in my
enthusiasm. I'll close with recommending the highway bridge over the Rio
Grande gorge north of Taos. Spectacular gorge, very lofty bridge, and
you can walk across it. There is also a place called something like Wild
Rivers Recreation Area on the left hand side of the highway heading from
Taos to Red River. Head in there for some deep canyons where the gorge
of the Red River meets the Rio Grand Gorge. You can look down from the
top, or walk down the trail to the confluence itself. Few go there, as
far as I know, although there are campsites and scenic overlooks on the
paved road going in.

Anyway, for Albuquerque, check out the Salinas Pueblo Missions NM. Or
check it out now at http://www.nps.gov/sapu/

Last time I did Albuquerque:

Old Town. Old part of Albuquerque that has shops and nice restaurants.
Lots of history. You can let the Scouts lose there for a while. There
is a rattlesnake museum that charges $10 I think. Lots of poison's
snakes. guy seems to do a good job of keeping them healthy.

Like every city in the SW there are hundreds of tourists traps called
Trading Posts. The real one in Albuquerque is located downtown in the
heart of the city. I can't remember it's name and it doesn't have a
website. It's located on Main street. I remember something like Jack's
or some simple name. It has been around forever. And your turquoise
does not melt if you throw it in boiling water for 20 minutes. (Locally
made rather than imported from the far east.) One of the last of the
original trading posts Toadlena is a real gem. There are some half way
decent ones in Gallup also.
Best one in my opinion is Notah Dinah in Cortez, Co. But I digress.

If you really want to have an impact on those kids. Arrange a native
American reservation tour. It is amazing that poverty like that exists
in the US.

There are also turquoise mines all around Albuquerque, don't know
anything about them.
