Also, what about hiking Wheeler Peak? We would be in Taos on June 17
and I'm wondering about the snow pack.

This year, unless they get a heat wave or a lot of spring rains, I would
count on a fair amount of snow on top of Wheeler that early. You could
call Carson National Forest (505)758 6200 and ask prior to leaving
though. It is a fairly long hike, about 8 miles and to an elevation of
13,161 feet. There are a number of other hikes in the area if you don't
do Wheeler Peak though. The Carson National Forest web site has a great
deal of information.

One of the hikes I have read about but haven't done is to visit
Elizabethtown just west of Philmont. Its an old ghost town from the
Baldy boom heyday. The photos I've seen show the ruins of several
buildings still standing.

Someone mentioned the Rio Grande Gorge bridge west of Taos. Pedestrians
on the bridge can get a couple of "cheap thrills". First, the bridge is
cantilevered, so when you look over the side all you see is DOWN with
very little of the supporting structure visible. This can give you a
very eiree feeling. Try to be standing on the bridge when a loaded
eighteen wheeler goes across too; you can "dance" with the bridge. Also
an eiree feeling.

Also, someone mentioned the Very Large Array near Socorro - that is "in
the neighborhood" of the Double H ranch if you are headed in that
direction. I don't know if there is anything that a visiting crew might
do at Double H other than drive by and wave though.

Hope this helps.

Happy Trails,

Roy Fisher
