Steve,
The Soda Dam is pretty cool but I don't think I would drive way out of my
way to see it. You could combine it with a trip to Bandelier National
Monument and/or the atom bomb museum at Los Alamos. Then take hwy 4 up into
the Jemez Mts. It takes you past the Valle Grande volcanic caldera and on to
Jemez Springs. Then stay on 4 heading south and go through some beautiful
red rock country before getting to Albuquerque.
I don't think snow would be a problem on Wheeler in mid June but it is a
long hike and you don't want to wear out the adults before the trek starts.
If you just have a day in the area I would spend it in Taos. That early in
the summer rafting the Taos Box would be a blast.

As long as we're talking about other things to see/do in the neighborhood, I
would be interested in your experience with Soda Springs Dam, a natural hot
springs north of Albuquerque (Jemez Springs) - is this a fun thing and
suitable for scouts? We'd probably do that after our trek.
Also, what about hiking Wheeler Peak? We would be in Taos on June 17 and
I'm wondering about the snow pack.
