Additional thoughts on Soda Springs Dam:
 
It is right beside Highway 4, so little challenge to get there. Your
driving route is not real fast, but you will likely drive right past Bandelier
National Monument. Be sure to stop! The route then takes you through the Jemez
Caldera, which is pretty amazing. Some short hikes are available there, but
backpacking requires a permit fee, IIRC. Very scenic country.
