[philmont] The Hiking Dogs Have Spoken...

Mike,

Your personal dogs (de feet) should be ready for some pounding before you follow the young hiking dogs.

I followed a 16 year old crew on Trek 24 in 2004, so we went across Wilson Mesa and Pueblano / Pueblano Ruins instead of Greenwood Canyon. This is a great trek. Watch out for Day 12 when you go 1500 feet up, 10 or 11 miles across, and 2500 feet down. The boys were walking on air, because they smelt civilization and pizza. I didn't smell so good and my feet just hurt from lots of miles so I was pretty slow going down to base camp. I didn't have blisters or other foot trouble, but my feet really felt pounded on Day 12.

There is a lot of mileage on this trek and then a high mileage section on Day 12 into base camp.

I'm going back with our Venturing Crew in 2007 and our first choice trek takes us to Tooth Ridge Camp on Day 11. So Day 12 will be a short downhill walk. Yeah!!!! I am so looking forward to that dry camp and leaving a deposit in the scenic pilot-to-copilot.

Larry.

PS - I am glad I'm not hiking from Baldy down to French Henry for program and back, but French Henry program is great!

at our trek meeting last night and selected four Strenuous itineraries.
Their top choice is 73 miles and the next is 80, so I guess I'd better up
the treadmill mileage. Assuming we get our first choice, anyone have any
experience with old itinerary 24 (now itinerary 28)? To recap trek 24:

Dean Cutoff
Rich Cabins
Greenwood Canyon
Copper Park (x2) (Baldy and French Henry stuff)
Upper Dean Cow
Dean Cow
Harlan
Ute Springs
Clarks Fork

And, the youth said they wouldn't mind adding a few miles to catch some
extra program, anyone on the list try that out? Thanks. YIS. Mike Conkey
