Bus Fee $$$ from Amtrak Raton to Philmont.
I see there is a $30.00 fee to be picked up by the Philmont bus at Raton..
I do not remember this fee in prior years. Is this new and $30.00 per
person???
The fee in 2005 was $25. The fee in 2003 was $20. When I first looked
at a Philmont trek for our troop in 2000, I was seeing people saying the
fee was $15. So, the fee has been there a long time, but it appears it
has been increasing a bit ahead of inflation.
We charged our crew $700/person in 2005 including the following in our
budget (coming from Fullerton, CA):
Philmont Trek fee $495
Amtrak $113 (average per person, young crew, AAA discount)
T-shirts(2), engraved carabiners(4), engraved water bottles(1) $36
Phlbus $25
Extra night in CHQ/breakfast $15
Misc. $16
We always tell our crew when we recruit for a trek that the anticipated
cost is $1000 but that we've been able to reduce that in the past. Our
2003 trek was actually a little more, $720/person because we had an
older crew and could not get as much discount on Amtrak.
We used the T-shirts, carabiners and metal water bottles both for our
trek and as gifts to our ranger and other folks around CHQ who were
particularly helpful along the way. I highly recommend getting engraved
carabiners and water bottles, make for great souviners.
YMMV
