Don's right about the official insignia as listed in the insignia guide. The BSA emblem is on the pocket and usually comes with the shirt. One of a specific list of backpatches centered 3" below the collar (I think) and the bull, loon or conch on the right shoulder.
I'm not a slave to the insignia guide, but I'm not in the patch blanket camp either. I wear two bulls because I went to the Ranch twice as a youth. It would look ridicuous if I put one for each adult trip. Two doesn't look too bad.
I wear two backpatches, the 1969 Jamboree and the Order of the Arrow of the same vintage, because when I earned those patches, the insignia guide allowed two. Now it's just one, but I say "too bad".
I have a museum quality patch collection and could go the Christmas tree route. I don't like the look personally. I wouldn't sew a previously pristine patch. Also, when I see such jackets, I usually find myself wondering why patches such as "Cub Scout Fun-o-Ree" and "Amarillo District Klondike Derby" merit such display. Plus, if you cut them off, it shows where they were on the jacket.
In 1969, the red ran on the jacket if it got wet, discoloring the patches. I don't know if it still does, as I carry a plastic bag when I wear it out.
An actual patch blanket is available from National Supply to give you that patch blanket look without ruining your jacket.
Just my two cents.
