[philmont] Treks 27 & 9 Mileage

On the subject of mileage - One thing to remember, as I'm sure anyone who is
looking at a Philmont map and has hiked tightly bunched contour lines at
Philmont or elsewhere will recognise, is that there are miles and then there
are - really - steep - miles.

"Be Prepared" to have some miles challenging but for others to be very
difficult indeed.

The question of which miles are tough and which are - really - tough is
difficult to quantify. Everyone will experience a given segment in a
different way, depending on conditioning, how interesting the scenery is,
hydration status and other factors.

Do pay attention to how tightly the contour lines are bunched. Give
yourself some extra "slack" in your hiking program for days when the contour
lines are bunched.
