I take a small section of foam carpet pad, ~18" square, that keeps the seat of your pants clean and typically use it next to a tree that acts as the back rest. I store it at the top of the pack so it's there quickly when needed and can also be used as a ground cloth if I need to unpack the pack to get to something out of the pack when necessary and the ground is very dirty. Get ~ 4' x 6' section and the whole crew can have a chair for only a few dollars.

Subject: [philmont] Camp Chairs at Philmont
As an older Scouter (50+) going to Philmont for the first time, I was thinking about including a camp chair in my backpacking gear. This would be my one "luxury" item. Otherwise, it looks as if my pack weight will be in the 20 to 25 pound range, with a fairly lightweight tent, bag and pack. After some investigation, I have concluded that the SlingLite chair is the best candidate, weighing in at about 18 ounces. Have any of you tried carrying a chair on a Philmont trek? Is it worth the effort or a bad idea I should just get over?
