[philmont] Camp Chairs at Philmont

Hi George,

I guess I'd be inclined to suggest that you leave the chair at home, simply because of the bulk (albeit small). And although the chair probably doesn't weigh a lot, it's still weight that you wouldn't need to carry. (Granted, I know each of us probably carries something that we wouldn't need to carry).

Here's my suggestion - bring a soft garden kneeling pad. It'll be like heaven at the end of the day. Several of us had them on our trek in 2005 and those that didn't have them were extremely jealous and envious.

A simple kneeling pad... weighs nothing, straps on the outside of your pack, and is very soft on the backside. Check around for the softest model... not the hard foam jobs, but the ones which have a softer foam middle and are more "squishy". You'll love it.

On the other hand, if you're hoping to have a chair for some back support, well, I guess my point is moot, except you could sit on the ground and use a rock or log as your back rest.

  Good luck.

As an older Scouter (50+) going to Philmont for the first time, I was thinking about including a camp chair in my backpacking gear. This would be my one "luxury" item. Otherwise, it looks as if my pack weight will be in the 20 to 25 pound range, with a fairly lightweight tent, bag and pack. After some investigation, I have concluded that the SlingLite chair is the best candidate, weighing in at about 18 ounces. Have any of you tried carrying a chair on a Philmont trek? Is it worth the effort or a bad idea I should just get over?
