[philmont] Digest (03/02/2008 00:01) (#2008-580) Trek 4

Our crew did Trek 4 in 2005. After the changes for 2007, Trek 4 is now Trek 14.

Excellent route and the crew enjoyed the program areas. We didn't hike Hidden Valley, but I've heard many others who have.

A couple thoughts on the trek:
If you're an "eat breakfast in camp" crew, ask for an extra breakfast at base camp so you're covered at Beaubien until you get 3 miles down the trail to Phillips Junction for your next food pickup. When we went in 2005, they made us hike down to PJ the night before to get our next food pickup and back up to Beaubien in spite of the fact we'd be hiking right past PJ in the morning. It didn't make any sense. Maybe that requirement has changed now, but maybe not. Either way, I'd address it at base camp logistics. If you don't get an extra breakfast at base camp, it's probably ok anyway. We always ate breakfast an hour into our hike in the morning and that puts you at PJ. Pick up your breakfast (and the rest of your food) and eat there.

  Trail Peak:
Once you get to Fowler Pass, you'll have the choice of hiking over Trail Peak with full pack or hiking into Beaubien and making Trail Peak a day hike. We hiked over Trail Peak with our packs and are glad we did. Going up the south side of TP was the toughest hike I've ever done, but we did it and were glad we did. Our conservation project was at Beaubien so trying to work in a day hike to Trail Peak and back would have been difficult. Plus we sort of (humbly) wore the fact we did TP with full pack as a badge of honor. It's a memory I'll always have.

Dave, we did Trek 4 in 2006. Assuming it's the same route, it's a good trek. Plan to take a side-hike up Trail Peak, very worthwhile. Next to last day from Webster Park to Tooth Ridge was a long one--we took the Hidden Valley route which lengthened it but definitely worth the extra miles and time. If you would like more details, I'll be happy to answer any questions you have.
