We made it simple. Prior to our Treks in 2000, and 2006 everyone agreed to do all program activities, period. Their vote. If they did not want to do activities they could stay home and backpack. So all crew members went to all activities. Now you can't make a boy do spar pole climbing or fire the black powder, but everyone was there to cheer everyone else. And amazingly once at the activity nearly 100% participated 100% of the time (In the two treks the only one who opted out was one boy afraid of heights who would not try spar pole climbing). But the decision was made prior to Philmont, and all agreed, and there was no discussion on the trek. No votes were taken at Philmont. And I do not recall on either Trek that the advisors had to suggest otherwise or had grumbling from the boys. They just went. Now the advisors didn't always go, but that is something else. And there was usually time to still play cards or sit and talk.
