I believe we were on Trek 4 in 2000, and 32? in 2006. Both times we hit Fowler's pass and opted for up Trail Peak with full packs on the way to Beaubien. I'd call them truely "challenging" hikes, not to dissuade anyone by calling it the "toughest" , but would not want to make anyone believe it is easy. We were told there are a few tougher climbs at Philmont, but Trail Peak is in the top 10. Boys were indeed proud of making it with packs, and in 2000 made the layover in Beaubien pleasant since we did not have to do the side hike to Trail Peak. Would recommend the steep climb if the crew is in shape. The boys still talk about it.

In 2000 we also did the steep side of Mt. Phillips out of Clear Creek, and in 2006 up Black Mountain, Big Red and Baldy, all with full packs. Not sure which was toughest, but all challenging, and worth the badge of honor the guys later bragged about accomplishing.

Our crew did Trek 4 in 2005. After the changes for 2007, Trek 4 is now Trek 14.

Excellent route and the crew enjoyed the program areas. We didn't hike Hidden Valley, but I've heard many others who have.

A couple thoughts on the trek:

Trail Peak:
Once you get to Fowler Pass, you'll have the choice of hiking over Trail Peak with full pack or hiking into Beaubien and making Trail Peak a day hike. We hiked over Trail Peak with our packs and are glad we did. Going up the south side of TP was the toughest hike I've ever done, but we did it and were glad we did. Our conservation project was at Beaubien so trying to work in a day hike to Trail Peak and back would have been difficult. Plus we sort of (humbly) wore the fact we did TP with full pack as a badge of honor. It's a memory I'll always have.
