I am unconvinced the ankle support from your typical boot makes any
difference at all
I'd like to see some documentation showing that it actually makes a
difference, as
my experience with the scouts and other hikers seems to indicate otherwise.
That would leave wanting your footware to keep the mud and dirt out, not the
ankle support.

I'll add two points.
1. Get good ankle support, especially if your from the flatlands. I did a
lot of Stairmaster and some practice hikes, but wasn't prepared for the
rocky terrain that causes your ankle to roll sideways, where I had little
strength built up. Extremely athletic boys might not need it, but it's not
that much more expensive for a little more insurance to avoid ankle sprains.
Speaking of which, bring an adjustable ankle wrap in your first aid kit. I
rolled my ankle and it made it possible for me to continue in discomfort
rather than pain.
2. My son used Bass Pro Shop's Redhead brand of boots. I think they ran just
under $100 back in '04. They worked very well for him.

You will get lots of input on this, I'll give our two cents
How much before Philmont should the boys be breaking in new boots? We
advise our growing scouts to get Phil Boots in March - May of the year they
go, depending on how growing is going. You are right about out growing them,
If you don't buy leather, which a growing kid will outgrow, they can be worn
out of the box. Fpr the training prior to Philmont we recommend the least
expensive things that will work, including good running shoe or cheap hiking
boots from Walmart or Target. We prefer over the ankle boots for support at
Philmont, but you will get every opinion on this. Unless you are experienced
in low cuts- avoid them IMHO at Philmont, but then thats what practice hikes
are for.
Is it worth it for the boys to buy higher end models that they will outgrow
by fall? absolutely not
Any recommendations for an "inexpensive" brand or make that will hold up to
Philmont? The Timberland Brand at Kmart or Walmart. What about
recommendations for adults who will be wearing them for years to come since
their feet won't be growing much? I have Montrails, forget which model,
bought at REI, paid about 125 , Luv em!
Best of Luck
