[philmont] Hiking Boots

My daughter wore Hi-Tech boots to Philmont in 2005 (purchased in Oct 2004)
and was still wearing them last weekend for our Philmont shakedown. I took
a look at them, and to me the tread was bad enough to replace.

She chose some Cabelas Backcountry Hikers as replacements. She has three
months and three shakedowns to get them ready. They are still lightweight
nylon/leather uppers with a faux gore-tex liner, so break in will be
minimal.

We tell our guys to buy boots for the March shakedown, and wear them at
least two hours every day (in a perfect world) or all day one day a week to
get the boots broken in and to get feet used to the boots.

The "Hi-Tech" brand has had good reviews and seem to hold up reasonably
well. I've gotten them
for me sons for years, but they've not worn them on an extended wilderness
hiking trek. So I'm
not sure about use at Philmont.

Dunham Boots was recently purchased by New Balance and their boots seem well
constructed and
reasonably priced.
