I agree with Don Roberts about ankle support. Someone last year on this list said an orthopedic doc on their committee says that ankle high boots caused some people to get sprained ankles. The only sprained ankles I've had I've received while wearing ankle high boots. I've done Philmont 3 times (not nearly the hardest hiking I have done) since the '60s and have never worn boots and have had no problems but I'm sure this discussion could go on forever - its one of those "whatever floats your boat" things. I also subscribe to the theory that if Gore Tex worked then jackets wouldn't need pit zips. I guess I enjoy hiking more than buying gear and I used to work for an outdoor manufacturer - we loved gear junkies that always had to have the latest thing.
