[philmont] Hiking Boots

Here's another little tidbid about those good old broken in boots...

Even if your feet are used to those boots, if you have them resoled they aren't the same good old boots anymore.

Resoling is an option for extending the life of those rather expensive hiking boots some of us like to wear (we are dinosaurs I fear).

I learned the hard way last summer. Resolved my Vasque Sundowners (had been on 2 Philmont treks already), and did a couple of long hikes in the "new" boots before our Colorado trip. I still ended up with hamburger heel and bloody socks in boots that I had not had trouble in previously. Partly due to my feet not being used to the "new" boots and partly due to a shoddy resoling job (who knows if the job is good or not until the boots are put on the trail...).

Got home from Colorado, put the Sundowners in the closet. Got some Vasque Zephyr GTX boots (lightweight leather/nylon uppers) and some Spenco backpacking insoles and now I feel like I am backpacking in running shoes. And I do need the ankle support....

Rambling... will stop here. Don't assume your resoled boots fit like they used to.

Words to the wise. If wearing boots that have "been there, done that", make
sure you reacquaint feet and boots with each other well in advance of the
trek.
