One thing to keep in mind concerning regarding wilderness first aid training is that you do not need to take the course directly through the American Red Cross or other nationally recognized organizations.

If you are lucky enough have someone who is already an American Red Cross CPR and First Aid instructor that has had some experience in outdoor activities, they can go through their chapter to become a Wilderness First Aid Basics instructor through a self-study course.

See "2008 First Aid Training Requirement for Philmont Crews" http://old.scouting.org/philmont/2008firstaidrequirements.pdf

We were lucky to have a dad that did this for us last year. He was an EMT instructor at U of MD and he offered the class for free, spending a lot of time on differences between treatment when professional help is 8 hours away vs. 8 minutes away. Following the requirements for 2007, he wrote the appropriate letter which I forwarded to Philmont before our trek date. It was excepted with no problem.

We went to Philmont with 15 crew members from 2 crews trained in WFA. I felt there was a great benefit knowing that most of us would be on the same page and able to work together if there were a serious injury to ourselves or others.
