[philmont] burro comments

We had a burro.loving called Moe by the boys.last year. We picked him up
from Ponil and dropped him off at Miranda. For our group he was a
lifesaver. For us, we picked him up day 4, if I remember correctly and had
him for 2 days. Day 4 for us started off slow and was our first signs of
any problems. We followed a 20 minute rotation in leading the burro and
then switch to the next scout. On this day, for the first time we
experienced pack problems.I was so thankful with 4 days of food, that Moe
carried half of it for us).a couple of our smaller boys (we had 4 under 100
lbs) were struggling.nothing we did seemed to really work, until it was
their turn to lead Moe.tears and frowns turned to smiles and laughter. We
only had one other pack issue the whole trip.

Moe was easy to lead, even when he showed some of his burro stubbornness.
The scouts took wonderful care of him and were sad to let him go.it was
touching to watch them all say goodbye. Whether we were lucky by the burro
we picked (the scouts do the picking and somehow managed to get the burro
that the instructor used for the packing demonstration.) or it was the burro
responding to the care and love that the boys showed him (I think it is a
combo of both) we were blessed to have Moe along.

I know some crew have had some tough stubborn burrows, but when we talk
about Philmont, all of the boys bring up Moe and there is always a smile on
his face.

On a side note.I remember last year there was a post about taking small guys
on a trek. There was a wonderful post that I have somewhere in my archives
about the heart of a scout.all of our small guys did great and carried more
than their share..when they did seem to struggle, one of the larger boys
quickly asked if they could help.for me it was wonderful to see the whole
group looking out for the whole group.everyone was considered equal, whether
you were 85 lbs or 200 lbs. So, don't worry too much when a small guy wants
to go.if you have a crew that sees themselves as a unit and all
prepare..everyone will be blessed!

I understand that if you select a trek that includes a burro, you must now
take the burro. It is no longer optional. Anyone that has had a burro
experience, please comment. Give pros & cons. Also whether your borro trek
was Ponil to Miranda or Miranda to Ponil.

Thanks,
