I was on a trek last summer that had a burro. To be honest, it was an enjoyable part of the trek. Some of the other crews were timid and afraid around their animals and correspondingly had problems after their animals decided it was not the boys who were in charge.
The rule last year was also that burros had to be taken. It was not enforced, although the crews that skipped failed a significant test of their commitment to the Scout Law in addition to cheating themselves out of a potentially great experience.
When my crew got our burro at Miranda, we had to wait an extra hour because another crew sent 3 boys to get their burro. When told it needed to be the whole crew, they promised to ne back with everybody in half an hour. They never came back and the wrangler doing the demonstration waited for them.
They will not chase you down or deny other program if you do not take the burro. However, keep in mind that if your trek includes them, you are agreeing to take them. Keeping your word is important and even if you rink nobody is being impacted by you slipping out, you could be impacting somebody else.
That said, take the burro, treat it right and it will be another great story to tell about your trek. I personally hope the young men on my next trek pick an itinerary that also includes burros.

I understand that if you select a trek that includes a burro, you must now take the burro. It is no longer optional. Anyone that has had a burro experience, please comment. Give pros & cons. Also whether your borro trek was Ponil to Miranda or Miranda to Ponil.
Thanks,
