[philmont] 2008 First Aid & CPR Requirements

From: Jim Thompson \(PhilSearch\) <Jim@PhilSearch.Org>
Date: Mon Mar 10 2008 - 18:10:01 CDT

Based on the fud on the list earlier thsi week regarding WFA, I asked Mark
for an official position:

"Philmont will accept the following levels of training in place of
Wilderness First Aid - Basic (16 hour course):

Wilderness First Responder (72 hour course)
    EMT - Basic, Intermediate, Paramedic
    Military Corpsman or Medic
    Outdoor Emergency Care
    Registered Nurse
    Nurse Practitioner
    Physician Assistant
MD (Medical Doctor) or DO (Doctor of Osteopathy)

A copy of a current license will be required at CHQ Registration upon
arrival at Philmont.

We will also accept similar courses to the American Red Cross Wilderness
First Aid - Basic provided they are offered by a nationally recognized
organization. We have a list of those that we have currently reviewed and
will accept.

        American Red Cross www.redcross.org
American Safety and Health Institute www.ashinstitue.org
Emergency Care and Safety Institute www.ECSIstitute.org
National Outdoor Leadership School (WMI) www.nols.edu/wmi/
        National Safety Council (NSC) www.nsc.org
        Stonehealth Open Learning Opportunities (SOLO)
www.soloschools.com/wfa.html
        Wilderness Medical Associates (WMA) www.wildmed.com
        Wilderness Medical Society (WMS) www.wms.org
        Wilderness Medicine Training Center www.wildmedcenter.com
        Wilderness Safety Council www.wfa.net

The National Safety Council course is still listed even though they no
longer teach the course.

We believe that requiring a First Aid Course designed to provide training to
help individuals deal with emergency situations when help is not readily
available is the correct approach and fits the backcountry adventures at
Philmont Scout Ranch.

Each crew must have at least one person with a current CPR certification. A
copy of the current certification will be required at registration. This
requirement applies to health professionals who will use their license to
comply with the Philmont Scout Ranch First Aid Requirement."
