[philmont] burro comments

Our crew took a burro from Ponil via Pueblano to Ute Meadows (but actually on to Miranda.) One of the best parts of our trip....but I'm likely to say that about anything we did! Seriously, we nick named him Chomper as he would eat anything at any time. One of our favorite crew pics is with the guys around Chomper with him wearing one of our crew hats. The training in Ponil was LONG because we were hit with a morning thunder and hail storm and had to finish the training in pouring rain. But we got to Pueblano relatively unscathed. Did our cons project in the AM and off to Ute Meadows. Then a smaller contingent took Chomper to Miranda (that was the hardest part as we were dog tired by the time we got back to Ute.)

But don't avoid the burros. They are a part of the whole experience!

Been that way since 2004 I believe.

Our crew this summer has Burro Packing as one of their top five program choices based on the experiences in 2006 (also a top five then).

As for crews who don't take the burro when assigned, I would suggest that they just forfeited their Arrowhead award, just like ditching a Cons project or the Opening Campfire or the assigned camps. But that's just my opinion.

  Happy Trails,

I understand that if you select a trek that includes a burro, you must now take the burro. It is no longer optional. Anyone that has had a burro experience, please comment. Give pros & cons. Also whether your borro trek was Ponil to Miranda or Miranda to Ponil.

  Thanks,
