This has morphed into an interesting thread, and one that I can relate to
very well. Our two crews each had a couple of meetings where the youth
members selected the program and geographic features that they wanted to
include in their treks. Each crew had at least one member with previous
Philmont experience as well as at least one advisor with previous Philmont
experience. Using the "unofficial" 2007 Treks books, each crew selected
their top five itineraries. When we got the 2008 books it was very
interesting to watch the two crews operate.
In one crew, the advisors reviewed the current treks comparing them to the
five selected and notified the crew that everything was still the same and
filled out the card. In the other crew, the advisor gave the book to the
crew leader (knowing that the selected itineraries were unchanged) and the
crew looked through the list of camps and programs to make sure nothing
changed, then filled out the card. One crew had their problem solved for
them; one crew solved the problem themselves.
Which one do you think got more out of the experience?
Happy Trails,
Roy Fisher
