Train at longer distances than you anticipate, if possible. Less for
the physical aspect, while not inconsiderable, than for the mental
aspect of establishing the "Suck Scale", as in "That hike from Dean Cow
to Harlan kinda sucked...but it didn't suck as much as our 21-miler in a
day with full packs back home!"

We called that the Suck Scale, Suck-Meter, your terms will vary. But it
is helpful.

Russ
'average' will be deceptive.
Once you get your Trek Book and look at the different treks you might
see = what I mean.
We took the 'challenging' trek --- the shortest -- maybe 63 miles so =
average is like 6 miles but you spend a day in Philmont's base camp then
the first trail day you = hike 1-2 miles and the second trail day you
hike 2-3 miles then 'your = mileage will vary.' Philmont does this to
get all crews acclimated to the = altitude. We did 10 mile days and on
our 'rest' day we climbed Baldy and = in total hiked 6 miles with no
backpacks. Well we did have to get 5 days = of food and we made a bad
decision to take only 1 backpack to carry it so = it was a bit harder
than it sounds.
=20
On training treks it might be best to train at the longer distances that
= you might encounter.
we did a 21 mile training trek in 2 days and should have dropped the
adult = who complained so loudly after the 14 miler. I know, I know 14
miles is long and it was and = we all were tired but this person went on
and on how what we had just done was stupid when he failed = to see any
good in that long of a daily trek. Of course he had the heaviest pack
and was the = most out of shape but ;) =20 YiS Sam Taylor =20 =20

Russ,
As you have read, or will read,?there are?lots of variables involved in
answering?your question.
However, if you add up the mileage of all 35 treks,?from the 2007 treks
book,?you get 2,372 miles, divide by 35 treks = 67.78 miles, divide by
11 days on-the-trail = 6.17 miles.
Now that is about as "down-n-dirty" as you can get.

Just got our trek packets today her in St Louis, IL. The packets looked
like they had been dragged half way around the world they were beat up
so bad. Philmont did a great wrapping job so everything was intact.
