Thought maybe some of you would be interested in some of our Scouts
"Thorns and Roses" observations from our last two 10 mile hikes. Our
first one was in 15 degree weather and the second was in unexpected 4
inches of snow and rain..

*_Hawn State Park_**_, _**_MO_**_ Hike (Jan 08)_*

   1. Don't bring too much food.
   2. Make sure you bring food.
   3. Make sure you bring enough water.
   4. Don't over dress.
   5. Layers are good.
   6. Stay together as a group.
   7. Old people up front - that would be the adult "advisor's"!

*_Audubon Trail Hike (Feb 08)_*

1. If some part of your gear starts bothering you in the first mile,
then it will probably

really be bothering you by mile five.
2. Always be prepared because you never know what kind of weather
conditions you'll have.

We didn't know there would be 4 inches of snow on the ground.
3. Tennis shoes are not hiking shows. You slip and slide and your feet
get wet
4. Water proof hiking boots are good. You can cross shallow streams
much better and when

you accidentally step in puddles your feet stay dry
5. Pack covers are great for keeping your gear dry when it rains on you.

6. Wear layers so you have options
7. Bring enough food to eat

8. Bring enough water, even when it's really cold you still perspire a
lot and you need to

drink water - some ran out.
9. Having rain gear to wear when it rains is a good thing.
10. Cotton clothing is not good when it gets wet from the rain - you get
really cold
11. Bring gloves
12. Wearing belts on your pants is a good thing
