[philmont] Rain Pants

Just from a guy who can't carry what he once could carry.
A friend of mine told me "stupid is, stupid does"! I finally heard him.
I use my rain pants as my long pants. I use my rain coat as my long sleeve shirt. I have heard some where 2 or more uses or don't take it? Don't remember where I heard this. My pack weighed 43 lbs leaving base camp with 4 days of food and 4 quarts of water.
I have experienced the storm going up to the top of Mt. Phillips, was not my best moments of the trip.
Any one needing an Adult just let me know. I don't have a ride this year. I have everything for a crew of 12, everything.

Your pack may vary,

We were going to Phillips from Sawmill, so we were climbing the Cyphers side. I believe this was my fourth or fifth trek, so we really thought we had it together. Had an adult with NUMEROUS problems or would have already been there. It happens. Rain, lightning, then hail. Flash-boom. Had to dump our packs, spread out and gear up. As the time passed, I looked around and saw most of the scouts had on shorts and no rain pants. Good jackets. More time passed, the storm seemed worsen. Hail was beginning to cover the ground. Some scouts were now shivering, and I began to think of what I would do if it didn't stop soon. Those of us with rain pants were fine (if we didn't get struck by lightening!!!) Couldn't go on, (to our sister crew at the top) because we were very close to that clearing that leads to the top. Couldn't go back because we couldn't take our packs and the nearest shelter was probably Cyphers. Needless to say, the storm passed and we got to our sister crew (who had started a fire while worrying about us).

After that incident rain pants became required. NO EXCEPTIONS in our troop. Not great ones. Not expensive ones. Heck, you probably won't even wear them. Bring them anyway, no exceptions. Health and safety are in the Advisor's domain. Learn from experiences. That's one thing I won't have to worry about, if it happens again.

I know you can make the case that all the storms are short. We did. Leave early and avoid the storms. We did. Too much weight for something you probably won't even use. Some say.

This advice is, at least, worth what you paid for it.
