[philmont] On Rain Pants

Rain pants can do double duty.......not only for use in a downpour but also on the cold nights/mornings as an over-pant.

I'm always amazed at the Non-Be-Prepared attitudes of those that say rain pants are not worth the weight or pack space.

I have paid the price in the early days of minimalists backpacking....but at least in my opinion I'd rather Be Prepared and have them.

With regard to rain pants - I don't.? I use
nylon zip-offs and gators, even in a rainy year lik '04 the pants dry
very fast. <<<

I used to agree with this.? As long as I was able to keep moving I
hiked through cold, wet and windy conditions wearing a rain top and
nylon hiking shorts and never felt cold.? Then .... we spent the night
at Wild Horse in our tents listening to one of the worst lightening
storms I have ever experienced.? We waited in our tents in the morning
until we thought it had passed, broke camp and I donned my usual rain
top and shorts to hit the trail.? Then it hit again. Lightening very
close together with zero time between flash and boom.? Spread out and
squat time.?? The temperature dropped rapidly.? Throw in a little hail
for effect.? By the time we were able to get moving I was shivering
uncontrollably and very worried about hypothermia.??

Never again.

Doug
