Dave, others have commented on letting the crew spread out on the trail. Besides the actual safety aspects of allowing this to happen (and as advisor it's your prerogative and responsibility to prevent this, using all your wood badge leadership skills to help the crew figure it out), Philmont staff will counsel with you and the crew leader should this occur out there. This is an absolute no-no on their grounds and with good reason--which I won't repeat as others have addressed it. Crew pace is a big issue--and I truly mean CREW pace. The youth can figure it out with some help and guidance, but they must understand that crews split as you described is a bad idea and is not to happen on the trail. Most crews have this variable pace issue to deal with but they get it worked out--and before arriving at Philmont is the time to do so. Your Ranger won't let it happen the days he or she is with you all.
Berryman Trail is a great Philmont practice here in our area--east half of the loop teaches water management. I've been on it twice and look forward to my next chance to get out there.
Wish I was going to Philmont this summer--but must settle for Isle Royale instead.
