WRT "Maybe the Ranger will be more accommodating if we offer to buy him/her
a root beer too."

You will discover that your Ranger's flexibility with the crew on trail day
1 is directly in proportion to his opinion of the crew's level of
preparedness. To be clear the crew's program on trail day 1 *IS* Ramger
Training. If you can read a map, hang a bear bag, purify water, cook PSR
food, understand bear protocol, practice good sanitation, etc well and can
demonstrate that you will have time for additional program. My advice is to
have this conversation with the Ranger early rather than later but after he
has some experience with your crew and you've demonstrated that you are,
indeed, both a crew and prepared.

My opinon and my experience.

Thanks all, I got the information I was looking for.

Like several others have posted, we are scheduled in the area our first
night and I was looking at options to discuss with the crew leader - for him
to talk to the crew and Ranger of course - to take advantage of the
opportunity. Maybe the Ranger will be more accommodating if we offer to buy
him/her a root beer too. <grinning>

I certainly hope we will be hiking through much too early to stop in for a
root beer based on the feedback I've received.

Our trek ends at Ponil, and I was looking at the possibility of starting
and ending the trek with a celebratory cup of root beer.

  Thanks Again and

  Happy Trails,

  Roy Fisher
