I carried one in 2005, and we used it enough times that I felt that the
weight was easily justified. In 2007, I convinced another adult that the
weight was so justified that *he* should carry it, and we only used it a
time or two (partly because asking for someone else to pull it out was more
trouble than getting it out myself; I should have had him carry the extra
stove fuel or something else instead). I was careful never to inquire about
how he'd feel about taking it on future treks though. I found it
sufficiently comprehensive that we didn't find much that wasn't in it, but
an update to make it both lighter and a bit easier to look stuff up would be
welcome.
A lot depends on whether you or your youths are the kind who want to know
things like "what kind of flower is that?", or the kind who trample them all
equally without being interested in their name or classification. I grew up
in a family that lugged all kinds of books around, and felt the need to
identify any bird, flower, tree, bug or rock or critter that we ran across.
I'm still fairly competent at birds, flowers and trees but have forgotten
most of the rocks and bugs, and while I've failed to pass very much of that
passion on to my sons, at least a couple of the kids in the troop enjoy it.
