Yes, we treat the stream water than already has animal polution in it. Of
greater concern to me at Philmont is the impact human dipping has upon the
environment. As mentioned in a previous post, if only one crew chose to
dip, then the impact is minimal. If every person trekking took a dip, the
body oils and salts would lead to major polution of the ecosystem dependant
upon those water sources.
 
The underlying fact is that Philmont regulations say don't do it. Anyone
familiar with LNT also knows that beyond the "basic principles" of LNT, the
rules of the land managing agency are to be followed. In this case, our
land manager is Philmont and if they say NO - then that should be the final
answer, regardless of opinions on the impact.
