Folks have had real problems on the trail from Black Mountain down the ridge to Shaffer's Pass, just because the route is used so infrequently. The trail is poorly marked and I have heard of more than one crew having difficultly. Perhaps my good friend,
Dr. Bob Klein will relate his story of trying to find the trail. My vote would be to go thru Lamberts down to Hunting Lodge and into Clark's Fork.
