Re: [Philmont]: Re: [Philmont]:  Trek12 questions

In 1998 we had not difficulty finding the trail except for a few minutes
searching on Red Hill. (We were enroute from Red Hill to Shaffer's).

However, it was a grueling hike with no water after leaving camp in the am,
and very little shade. The suggestion to avoid it is a good one, unless you
can't resist the opportunity to climb Red, Bear and Black.

One special warning: the final several miles are through rolling meadow. Only
a few of the "hills" show up on your map, due to the large contour interval on
the map. It is a constant state of anticipation and disappointment when
the "next hill" turns out to be just another bump in the road!
