I wore contacts on three treks. I did not experience any discomfort or
problems. The trail dust and the dry conditions of New Mexico might cause
some problems for contact wearers. I would suggest bringing glasses as a
back-up in case your crew member experiences a problem.
As for sanitation, contact wearers will need to wash their hands to remove
trail dirt (mostly) before handling their contacts. We treated contact
solution as a smellable. This could be open to discussion. However, I would
not suggest putting your contacts in the bear bag at night in case a bear
gets your bear bag.
