Very true that crews should not schwack on the Ranch property, but
Greenwood-Copper is Valle Vidal land & schwacking is generally encouraged in
the Valle. A caveat to that general rule tho is that it is also very easy
to get lost in the section leading to/from Greenwood & last summer in
logistcs the map was labeled with a large 'NO SCHACKING' in that area, and
our crew was verbally informed of this as well. I believe the summer of '01
is the first summer it was officially labeled No SCHACKING in that area only
of the Valle treks. That area has had the highest ratio lost crews of any.

Any crew doing the Greenwood-Copper route should get the Baldy quad map. It
is also very true that the map does not show the old logging road all the
way, but once you are on it, it goes & goes & goes.... and goes some more
until you think it has no end. Good news is that once on the road, you
simply have to navigate by following the rock cairns placed every so often &
pay attention to side roads taking off that usually have 3 logs placed
across them as a warning that those are not the roads to follow. After
hiking this section, I find it difficult to imagine schacking thru there
because there is so_much deadfall throughout the whole area, it would take a
long time climbing over, under & around to make your way off the road. As
it is, even on the road there is downfall that has to be navigated. Our
crew did the direction from Copper-Greenwood last summer & it was tough &
long. I've heard from crews going the Greenwood-Copper direction that
sounds like it was equally challenging. My personal opinion is that this
portion of your trek between Copper & Greenwood, no matter which direction
you are travelling, is going to be the most challening you will face. It
will be your 'hump day' and it will all be downhill from there. <g>
(figuratively speaking of course)
